Labor offers Fed cash to Horticulture Australia to identify priority climate-research objectives to start 2009

Posted by gmarkets on 12 October, 2007

Federal Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Kerry O’Brien, last Friday announced that if Labor was elected to government there would be additional measures to help agriculture adjust to the impact of climate change, reported The Canberra Times (4/10/2007, p.36).

More R&D: These would target increased assistance for research and development, on-farm adjustment financial assistance and rural financial counselling, together with a bipartisan approach to drought policy. O’Brien signalled that funds would be allocated to existing primary industry research and development corporations.

Consultation process: Horticulture Australia Limited would be required to consult with their respective industry sector to identify priority climate research objectives to commence in 2009. The corporations would be required to work closely with their research and industry partners to ensure their plans were relevant to the sector and well-targeted.
