Adelaide City Council to shut down key streets for bicycles only day; Melbourne to ban motor vehicles from CBD on February 15 next year

Posted by gmarkets on 22 September, 2007

Adelaide City Council was planning to shut down key streets for a bicycles only day, reported The Advertiser (8/9/2007, p. 9). Family cycling encouraged: Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said Gouger St or North Tce were the most likely targets, The Advertiser reported. Council wanted to conduct the event during the last Tour Down Under, but organisers declined the offer. “Still, we are keen to do something, and funding has been allocated for the occasion,” Harbison said. “We might look at closing a portion of the city so we can have some family cycling activities. They may involve an area like Gouger St or North Tce – there has got to be somewhere for people to go, but not too far.” In Victoria, the Melbourne City Council has generated a storm over controversial plans to ban motor vehicles from its CBD on February 15 next year.
