APEC conference was a disaster, which ended with a “weak and cowardly” declaration on climate change, argue Federal Greens, Democrat senators

The APEC conference was a disaster which ended with a “weak and cowardly” declaration on climate change, Greens senators say. Also it was not approved by Parliament. The 21 APEC leaders all signed the Sydney Declaration, agreeing to work towards an aspirational goal in energy intensity and to set their own greenhouse goals and action plans. But Australian Greens leader Bob Brown said the agreement did nothing to improve the global warming situation. Sydney Declaration is vacuous:“The idea that we have saved the planet – [US President] George Bush and [Prime Minister] John Howard – is so absurd [because] they are missing in action when it comes to understanding climate change and the need to do something about it,” Senator Brown said. “The Sydney Declaration is vacuous – it’s just hot air – it’s not action.”

“world will sincerely regret” Fellow Greens senator Christine Milne said the climate change declaration was “weak and cowardly” and the agreement to sell uranium to Russia was a big mistake. “The world will sincerely regret what Prime Minister Howard has done in selling out human rights, in selling out democracy, in selling out the rule of law when he signed a deal to sell our uranium to Russia,” Senator Milne said.

Man of coal Australian Democrats leader Lyn Allison agreed. “I don’t think it’s done anything for John Howard – the very embarrassing performance of the US President, I think, has made the situation worse, repeating that John Howard is his “man of steel”, she said.
