Synergy sneaky tariffs for SmartPower or NaturalPower mean households to pay 3c and 4.4c a kilowatt hour more in Western Australia; but, will government?

Does the Western Australia Minister for Energy’s department use GreenPower? That was the question asked by Dr S.C. Thomas, Member for Capel, speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Western Australia, 28 August 2007. He referred to the price-rises for home users published by the state-owned dominant Western-Power offshoot, retailer, Synergy – which he suggested, applied selectively to homes and not to Synergy’s owner, Government, which would not pay the 3c and 4.4c a kilowatt hour extra.

“Moral corruption of the Carpenter Labor”: Thomas, said “This debate highlights the environmental and moral corruption of the Carpenter Labor government… It is very interesting that the basic household communities who are trying to do the right thing by moving to alternate energy sources through SmartPower, or more importantly from my perspective NaturalPower, will be slugged a surcharge increase of between 3c and 4.4c a kilowatt hour.

Please do tell: Thomas said: “Perhaps when the Premier responds he will tell us which government departments might be hit by this rise. Which government departments pay SmartPower or NaturalPower surcharges? The government will add to the price of power for domestic consumers of electricity in Western Australia. Therefore, I am very interested to know whether the Department of the Premier and Cabinet will have to budget for more money to be transferred back to Synergy for the purchase of SmartPower.

List of GreenPower users across Australia:

• The New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet uses GreenPower

• The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment uses GreenPower

• The NSW Department of Energy Utilities and Sustainability uses GreenPower
