Second anti-Iran speech, in a week: President George W. Bush authorises “military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran’s murderous activities”

“I have authorised our military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran’s murderous activities.” Mr Bush, whose Administration has accused Iran of arming Shiite militias in Iraq, added, “The Iranian regime must halt these actions.” Mr Bush – in his second speech in a week devoted to trying to build support for the unpopular war – urged patience and outlined the dangers of early withdrawal, reported The Canberra Times, 30/8/2007, p.17. President George W. Bush lashed out at Iran for meddling in Iraq’s affairs, saying an early US withdrawal from the country would encourage Iran to accelerate its alleged nuclear ambitions. That, he said, would touch off an arms race in the volatile Middle East.

Anti-Iran chatter at fever-pitch: But some of his strongest comments were reserved for Iran, which he has repeatedly accused of fomenting instability in Iraq. He stressed that Iran’s “active pursuit of technology, that could lead to nuclear weapons, threatens to put a region already known for instability and violence tinder the shadow of a nuclear holocaust”.
