APEC defined: a dating service for diplomats and international policy wonks

Posted by gmarkets on 3 September, 2007

The real story about APEC was that the forum was a huge, complicated, but efficient dating service for diplomats and international policy wonks, wrote Annabel Crabb in The Sydney Morning Herald (3/9/2007, p.2). Hot and bothered: “These endless bilateral meetings, summits, talkfests, round-tables, workshops, working groups, forums, think tanks, seminars, symposia, taskforces – what do you think they’re all about? Romance of course. Many a heart has quickened behind poly-viscose suiting as the handsome third assistant policy officer for fisheries outlines his highly original plan for restricting mackeral by-catch. Many a late-night working group on non-biodegradable recyclables has lingered over Thai takeaway, its attendees red-eyed from hours of Power-Point, the married ones stealing away until finally only two ecological dreamers are left to exchange the jarring halogens of meeting room six for the sweetly pre-coital glow of the hotel’s club bar.

4000 hangers-on: “Of the estimated 4000 hangers-on who will visit Australia as part of the APEC retinue, at least 20 per cent must get lucky or the world will face a disasterous diplomat drought in 35 years,” she concluded.
